Driving in Cyprus as a Tourist

Cyprus is one of the most car-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean. Roads connect all major cities, beaches are easily reachable, and there are no toll fees anywhere on the island. With a rental car you can explore the Troodos mountains, the Akamas Peninsula, the historic Paphos region, and the coastline at your own pace.

The most important thing to know: Cyprus drives on the left. Take a moment to adjust before you start your journey — especially at roundabouts and when exiting parking areas.

Driving FAQ

🚗Which side of the road do you drive in Cyprus?

Cyprus drives on the left — a legacy of British colonial rule until 1960. If you're from a right-hand traffic country (USA, Germany, Israel, etc.), take extra care at roundabouts and when making turns.

📄Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

EU, UK, and EEA licence holders do not need an IDP. All other nationalities must carry a valid IDP alongside their national licence. IDPs must be obtained in your home country before travelling — they cannot be issued in Cyprus.

What are the speed limits in Cyprus?

50 km/h in built-up areas · 80 km/h on rural and secondary roads · 100 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras are common. Fines start at €85.

Is it safe to drive in Cyprus?

Yes, generally safe. Major motorways between cities are well-maintained and clearly signposted. Mountain roads in the Troodos region are narrower — drive carefully, especially after rain. Avoid driving on unmapped dirt tracks with standard vehicles.

🍷What is the drink-driving limit in Cyprus?

The legal BAC limit is 0.5‰ — lower than the UK (0.8‰). For new drivers (licence held under 3 years) the limit is 0.2‰. Police conduct regular roadside checks. Our advice: zero alcohol if you're driving.

🚫Can I drive a BeRent car to Northern Cyprus?

No. BeRent vehicles are insured exclusively within the Republic of Cyprus. Crossing the Green Line (UN Buffer Zone) into Northern Cyprus is strictly prohibited under your rental agreement and would void all insurance coverage.

📋What documents do I need to rent a car?

You need: (1) valid driving licence held 3+ years, (2) passport or national ID, (3) credit card for the security deposit, and (4) IDP if your licence is non-EU. Originals only — no photocopies.

☀️What is the best time to drive in Cyprus?

April–June and September–October are ideal: warm weather, lighter traffic, better rental prices. July and August are hot (35°C+) and coastal roads near beaches get congested. Winter is mild but Troodos mountain roads can be icy.

🆓Are there road tolls in Cyprus?

No tolls at all. Cyprus motorways — A1, A2, A3, A5, A6 — are completely free. You will never need to stop at a toll booth anywhere on the island.

🛣️What is the road like from Limassol to Paphos / Larnaca?

Both routes use well-maintained dual-carriageway motorways. Limassol → Paphos: A6 motorway, ~45 minutes (75 km). Limassol → Larnaca: A2 motorway, ~45 minutes (75 km). Limassol → Nicosia: A1 motorway, ~45 minutes (80 km). All free, fast, and comfortable.
